Canada added 75,000 jobs: What newcomers need to know
Canada’s job market improved in July 2026. Employment increased by 75,000 jobs, and the unemployment rate fell to 6.4%, its lowest level in two years.
British Columbia also added about 18,000 jobs.
These are positive signs. But if you are looking for work, finding a job may still feel difficult. Here is what the latest numbers can mean for your job search.
Some industries are growing more than others
Job opportunities are not growing equally across industries.
In July, employment increased in:
Wholesale and retail: +21,000 jobs
Finance, insurance, and real estate: +18,000
Professional, scientific and technical services: +17,000
Construction: +16,000
This is why it can be helpful to look beyond one job title or industry.
Think about your transferable skills
As a newcomer, your previous job title may be different from job titles used in Canada. But many of your skills can still be valuable to Canadian employers.
