GCSE results: No degree needed as UK opens train driver jobs to 18-year-olds

The change means young people receiving their GCSE results can now consider train driving as a career option, with 18-year-olds eligible to apply for train driver training without a university degree.

The new rules, which came into force in June 2026, allow school leavers to begin the training immediately after leaving school or college, giving them the opportunity to start a skilled career without spending several years in higher education.

The UK Department for Transport announced the change on Wednesday as students received their GCSE results, highlighting train driving as one of the career paths available to school leavers.

The government said the reform is designed to tackle a shortage of train drivers while giving young people access to stable, skilled and well-paid jobs.

Currently, fewer than four per cent of train drivers in the UK are under 30, while about a quarter of the existing workforce is expected to reach retirement age by 2030.

The new age limit is therefore expected to help bring younger workers into the rail industry and build the next generation of train drivers.

For students considering their options after receiving their GCSE results, the government said train driving offers a training pathway that does not require a university education.

Trainee train drivers earn between £27,000 and £33,000 nationally, with apprentices able to learn on the job while earning a salary.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate the ability to remain focused under pressure, make sound decisions, work effectively as part of a team and put safety first.

Rail Minister, Lord Peter Hendy, said lowering the minimum age would give more young people the opportunity to move directly into employment and build long-term careers in the railway industry.

The change also brings the UK in line with countries including Switzerland, Germany and Australia, where 18-year-olds can already train to become train drivers.

The government said the reform forms part of wider changes to the rail sector, including plans for Great British Railways, and its efforts to tackle youth unemployment.

For young people who have just received their GCSE results, the Train Drivers Academy has also developed resources to help aspiring drivers understand the profession, prepare applications and find trainee driver vacancies across the country.
