Australian employment unexpectedly declined in July, pushing the jobless rate to its highest level since late 2021, according to data released on Thursday. The weaker-than-expected report reduced pressure on the central bank to raise interest rates.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported a net fall of 15,800 jobs in July compared with June, when employment had surged by a revised 80,300. Analysts had forecast an increase of 15,000, but full-time positions did rise by 16,300. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.5%, above the expected 4.4%, as the participation rate eased to 66.9%. Hours worked dropped 0.6%, while underemployment remained steady at 6.4%.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has judged that the labour market has softened somewhat, a factor behind its decision to hold the policy rate at 4.35% last week after three hikes this year. Data released on Wednesday showed wages grew at a moderate pace for a fifth consecutive quarter.

However, policymakers warned that further tightening cannot be ruled out if inflation risks materialise, citing the Middle East conflict, the global AI boom, and poor productivity that has restrained the economy’s potential growth rate. RBA Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser said on Wednesday that the central bank needed to see more slowdown in the labour market. The RBA expects the unemployment rate to rise to 4.5% by the end of the year before peaking at 4.8% in 2028.

The Australian dollar fell 0.2% to $0.7111 following the report. Markets remain divided on the likelihood of a fourth rate increase this year, with much depending on upcoming inflation data.
