More people than ever are working from home, a change precipitated by the pandemic. Today, an estimated 41 per cent of workers in Great Britain tune into calls from home at least some of the time, a staggering 23.2 million people compared with 1.5 million people 10 years ago. This includes 13 per cent who work exclusively from home, and 28 per cent who follow a hybrid model. While some major companies have pushed for the five-day return to the office – to the dissatisfaction or even resignation of some workers – most workplaces have retained some degree of flexibility, with Fridays at home being one of the most common post-pandemic practices. Unemployment, which has been growing faster than forecasters’ predictions, surprisingly fell a little to 4.9 per cent — a sign that workers entered this crisis in a stronger position than feared. But beneath that number, the picture is more troubling. Well before Trump’s first strikes on Iran, our labour market was already ​“cooling” – a word economists use to describe slower hiring, fewer job vacancies, lower worker turnover and lower wage growth. Nearly half (47%) of UK job seekers have had an AI interview, research from the hiring platform Greenhouse has found.In its survey of 2,950 active job seekers, including 1,132 UK-based workers, with additional respondents from the US, Germany, Australia and Ireland, it found that 30% of UK candidates had walked away from a hiring process because it included an AI interview.We asked people about their experiences of AI interviews. The responses included those who found it “awkward” and “humiliating”. Over the past two decades, ageing populations, rising retirement ages and higher education levels have contributed to rising employment rates among workers aged 55 and over across OECD countries. Yet many workplaces are still designed around shorter careers, leading many people to leave work earlier than they need or want to. This deepens the demographic pressures facing ageing societies, including labor shortages, as early exits reduce the number of employees and inflate public welfare and healthcare costs.
