HURT, Va. (WSET) — A major economic development milestone for Virginia’s Southside was celebrated on Tuesday as Avio USA broke ground on its new advanced manufacturing facility in Hurt.
The company, which is a subsidiary of global aerospace company Avio S.p.A., will invest about $500 million to build an 860,000-square-foot manufacturing facility at the Southern Virginia Multimodal Park.

First announced in February, the project is expected to create 1,500 jobs.
Gov. Abigail Spanberger spoke at the groundbreaking and said it is one of the largest economic development projects in the region’s history.
We are grateful, and we are ready to do right by this investment and the trust you have placed in Virginia,” Spanberger said.
The facility will produce solid rocket motors for defense and tactical propulsion systems, missile systems and commercial space applications.
At a time when the United States is focused on strengthening domestic supply chains and expanding manufacturing capacity, Virginia is helping to lead the way.
