Cancer Research UK, which describes itself as the world’s leading cancer charity, has announced a closing down sale at its branch at 79c London Road.
There is a 50 per cent discount on selected items at the shop as it nears its expecting closing in September this year.

This comes amid a wider restructuring of the charity, which carries out research into more than 200 types of cancer and is the world’s largest independent cancer research organisation.
Last year, it announced that it was closing around 190 shops across Britain, with 90 shops closing by the end of May 2026 and another 100 by next April.
By the end of this process, they aim to have around 320 shops, while opening around 12 new out-of-town superstores.
Michelle Mitchell OBE, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, said in October 2025: “I am deeply grateful to our dedicated supporters, volunteers and staff for their role and contribution in beating cancer together.
“Without action, we predict many of our shops will become unprofitable.
“A smaller, high-performing retail operation will mean we will fund more life-saving cancer research and better serve our customers, staff and volunteers.
“This news will be difficult.
“Our decisions have been taken after serious consideration. We’re committed to supporting everyone affected by these changes, and will provide clear information and support throughout the process.”
According to Civil Society, the charity expects the restructuring will impact around 600 members of staff, and up to 3,000 volunteers.

Some will be offered new roles while others will be supported during the redundancy process, with the charity blaming reduced footfall, higher national insurance contributions, and growing competition from online resale platforms.
Already one shop in Oxford has shut – at 114 London Road – on Saturday, June 6, while others around the country have also closed.
By making these changes, the charity said, they expect to increase their financial contribution to research by approximately £12.4 million over the next five years
