Program Overview
The King Center’s Predoctoral Research Fellows Program is a two-year, full-time postbaccalaureate fellowship designed to prepare individuals for careers in academic research related to global development. The program provides opportunities for fellows to gain significant research experience and prepare for applications to PhD programs.
The fellowship is in partnership with the Stanford Graduate School of Business and offers a multidisciplinary research environment. Fellows work with King Center Faculty Affiliates on research projects and have access to courses at Stanford University for credit.
This competitive fellowship includes tuition, health insurance, and a living stipend. Visa sponsorship and work authorization are also available for successful applicants.
The program especially encourages applications from individuals in low- and middle-income countries and those whose backgrounds and experiences contribute to the diversity of academia and the global development field.
Fellowship Details
- Location: Stanford University
- Appointment: Non-matriculated graduate student
- Program Components:
- Engage in research projects with faculty mentors.

Applicants should provide the following:
- Application Form: Include answers on interest in the program, King Center thematic areas, familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Stata, R, Python, Matlab), and previous research experience.
- CV: Include details about education, research experience, work experience, and skills.
- Transcripts: Submit undergraduate and, if applicable, graduate transcripts (unofficial copy acceptable).
- Optional Writing Sample: A paper or excerpt that showcases your writing and analytic skills. A senior thesis, Master’s thesis, or term paper are good choices.
- Letters of Recommendation: Provide the contact information for two recommenders who can speak to your relevant skills and experience. Recommenders will upload their letters via the application portal.
Eligibility Criteria
- Educational Background: Completed undergraduate degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent).
- Research Interests: Strong interest in global development and poverty alleviation.
- Quantitative Skills: Strong quantitative background with an interest in learning advanced research methods.
- Creative Problem-Solving: Ability to approach complex research questions independently.
- Future PhD Plans: Intention to pursue a PhD in a field related to global development.
